Halloween 2007

C0mcast and I… we are on the verge of a break-up. I’m sure my account is flagged as PAIN IN THE ASS CUSTOMER. But what am I supposed to do without a connection? READ or something?

Anyway…

Costumes. This is part of what I’ve been working on lately. Maybe I should thank Crapcast for not letting me get online so that I had time to finish this thing.

It was a little over my head, but I got it done — finally. And it’s nothing I want to ever attempt again. Let me just tell you: Bean had her own little sweatshop going on here.

To see more of the twins’ costumes (and to see past ridiculous costumes) click here to go to my Parenting post.

I’ve made their costumes in the past, but this year I only made Bean’s. I’m slowly weaning myself. Next year hopefully they will both choose to be some commercialized character that comes with its own itchy polyester manufactured costume. The most I will have to do is rip open a package.

I tried to avoid the making of the costume. I searched and searched for a Hello Kitty costume. Called our local Sanrio store. Looked everywhere online. Oh — there are Hello Kitty costumes. Weird ones:
What kind of scary Hello Kitty is that? I’m not even sure what is going on. Those pants are thick heavy fur. The headdress alone was enough to give me nightmares. That is so not a Japanese-made costume.

Then there was this one… I mentally measured Bean’s head and considered getting this for her, then contemplated sewing a similar costume, but G thought this cat looked nothing like Hello Kitty. And if a WHITE CAT can’t pull this off, well…

I could have gone this route, but C-Diddy, Air Guitar Champion of 2003, is really the only one who can rock the Hello Kitty breastplate. Okay, okay… I didn’t really consider putting a breastplate on Bean, but I went to high school with C-Diddy so I’m putting a little plug in for him and his movie.

There were plastic masks on ebay, similar to the ones we wore as kids. Remember? When Halloween costumes came in flimsy boxes with cellophane covers, and the masks had sharp edges that always scratched up your face? I couldn’t bear to put that on Bean either.

Plus, I like to make things difficult for myself. So sculpt (and sand, paint, repeat) I did.

The day before Halloween, their teacher handed me a slip of paper with instructions for the party the next day. Number three on the list? No masks or weapons please.

Perfect.

Wow! I am so impressed. My creativity begins and ends at the Target costume section.

I hope she got to wear the mask for trick or treating, at least.

You’re totally right. Hello Kitty and Superman are sickeningly cute! Meanwhile, that costume for the Bean was amazing!

Wow. Wow. Triple wow. I am soooo freakin’ impressed with that HK head. How DID you do it? You could sell an online tutorial, seriously. I feel like I might be in that boat next year - we have a kitty lover here too!

And the past years’ costumes? Priceless. Will you be my mommy too?

    Holy Crap Batman!…eeerr… I mean Superman? :)

the Hello Kitty mask rocks! And so do you. UNBELIEVABLE. Cannot believe that she couldn’t wear it to school! What gives? No masks!? HellOoooo (or in this case “Hello Kitty….haaa), it is H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N! One day’s notice is just not okay in my book. They work with kids–they should understand that some kids are dreaming up their costumes waaaaay in advance!

Anyway! It turned out beautifully! I’d hang it on her bedroom wall! Nice to see you be able to ROCK the art as well as ROCK the whole cool-mom-that-makes-my kids-costume. I know it was a challenging project, but I know you well enough to know that it was probably good to do a hands on art project.

    Ciao!

LOVE… LOVE ALL the costumes, past and present. (I want to inherit the Hello Kitty mask! Well, maybe not THAT one since it’s sentimental but… yeah, make me another one, won’t you? Hahahahaha… sorry… I shouldn’t kid about asking you to make ANOTHER one… it’s just great!)
    (no mask? why’s that?)

OK, I’m totally impressed that you can make any kind of costume. I can’t even sew on a button.

That’s a great Hello Kitty face. I consider myself crafty, but you do have to tell how you made it. If A-chan wanted to be HK, I might be stumped as how to pull it off. I like to make costumes rather than buying.

Your photos and commentary had me laughing out loud. The HK breastplate should be illegal.

How could I have not commented on this awesome post? Bean’s HK costume was incredible! The past costumes were also amazingly cool. I’m going to have to steal that PBandJ idea for Evie and the Sweet Pea. And Pebbles and Bam Bam? Too cute.

Oh, man. Too funny! I’m so lazy on the costume front that Cadence has worn the same thing 3 years running.
